Clavulanate: Uses, Side Effects, Dosage
Clavulanate FAQ
What is clavulanate potassium used for?
Clavulanate potassium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that helps prevent certain bacteria from becoming resistant to amoxicillin. Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as sinusitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, and infections of the skin.

Drug information provided by: Merative, Micromedex ® Amoxicillin and clavulanate combination is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body (eg, ear, lungs, sinus, skin, urinary tract).
How does clavulanic acid work?
Clavulanic acid is in a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
What is amoxicillin clavulanate?
Amoxicillin/clavulanate is a penicillin-type combination antibiotic made up of amoxicillin (the active, antibiotic part) and clavulanate potassium (which boosts the effectiveness of amoxicillin). Amoxicillin kills bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of cell wall mucopeptides (crystal lattice-like structures composed of amino acids).
What is clavulanic acid and amoxicillin used for?
The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, including infections of the ears, lungs, sinus, skin, and urinary tract.
