What is docosanol used for?
Docosanol topical (for the skin) is used to treat cold sores on the face and lips. Docosanol may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; feeling light-headed; wheezing, difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
What are the side effects of docosanol?
In July 2000, docosanol was approved for medical use in the United States as an antiviral agent for reducing the duration of cold sores. It is an over-the-counter medication (OTC). It is sold under the brand name Abreva among others. One of the most common side effects that has been reported from docosanol is headache.
How should I use docosanol?
Use docosanol as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely. Keep using docosanol as you have been told by your doctor or other health care provider, even if you feel well. Do not take docosanol by mouth. Use on your skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes (may burn).
What if docosanol is swallowed?
Tell all of your health care providers that you take docosanol. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists. Talk with your doctor before you use other drugs or products on your skin. This medicine may cause harm if swallowed. If docosanol is swallowed, call a doctor or poison control center right away.
How do you use docosanol for a cold sore?
Rinse with water if this medicine gets in your eyes or mouth. Apply this medicine at the first sign of a cold sore, such as tingling, redness, itching, or a blister. Wash your hands before and after applying docosanol topical. Remove any cosmetics before applying docosanol topical. Apply enough medicine to completely cover the cold sore.
Does topical docosanol cure herpes simplex?
Topical docosanol is used to treat the symptoms of herpes simplex virus infections around the mouth. Although topical docosanol will not cure herpes simplex, it may help relieve the pain and discomfort and may help the sores (if any) heal faster. Docosanol is available over the counter.
