What is ORS (oral rehydration solution)?
MSc. [Nutrition] ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) is a drink made up of water, sugar, and electrolytes that helps replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydration. It can be effective in treating dehydration caused by various reasons like glucose loss or salt loss from the body.
How do you make ORS?
Mix clean water, salt, and sugar together to make a homemade ORS. Stir ½ tsp (3 g) of table salt and 2 tbsp (25 g) of sugar into 4 1⁄4 c (1.0 L) of water. To improve the flavor, mix in some water flavoring. If you have a premade ORS packet: Stir a packet of premade ORS into 1 L (34 fl oz) of water.
What is ORS & how does it work?
It was first developed as a treatment for diarrheal diseases. Having diarrhea can also create a slightly acidic environment in the body which is damaging to your cells. So as well as glucose and electrolytes, ORS contains something called a base which counters the acid .
