What is tipranavir used for?

Tipranavir an antiviral medicine that is used to treat HIV, the virus that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome ( AIDS ). Tipranavir is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Tipranavir is used together with another drug called ritonavir. Tipranavir may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Does tipranavir cure HIV?

Tipranavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although tipranavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer.

Can tipranavir be used with ritonavir?

It is administered with ritonavir in combination therapy to treat HIV infection. [citation needed] Tipranavir has the ability to inhibit the replication of viruses that are resistant to other protease inhibitors and is recommended for patients who are resistant to other treatments.
