Viral Suppression - Strategies and Benefits
Viral Suppression FAQ
What is HIV viral suppression?
HIV viral suppression is critical to improve health, prevent sexual transmission, and reduce perinatal transmission. There are three key categories for HIV viral load measurements: unsuppressed (>1000 copies/mL), suppressed (detected but ≤1000 copies/mL) and undetectable (viral load not detected by test used).
What is viral suppression?
Viral suppression refers to the percentage of people with diagnosed HIV who have less than 200 copies of HIV per milliliter of blood. * Data not available for children aged 12 and under. † At least 1 viral load or CD4 test. ‡ Had 2 viral load or CD4 tests at least 3 months apart in a year. ** Based on most recent viral load test. Source: CDC.
What role does HIV suppression play in halting HIV transmission?
New WHO guidance and an accompanying Lancet systematic review released today describe the role of HIV viral suppression and undetectable levels of virus in both improving individual health and halting onward HIV transmission.
Does a suppressed viral load prevent HIV transmission?
Scientists do not have enough data to know whether having a suppressed or undetectable viral load prevents HIV transmission through sharing needles, syringes, or other injection drug equipment (for example, cookers). It very likely reduces risk, but it’s unknown by how much.
Can data science predict viral suppression?
Using a data science approach, this study aims to examine the longitudinal dynamic pattern of viral suppression, develop optimal predictive models of various viral suppression indicators, and translate the models to service-ready tools for clinical support and decision-making. Our main research objectives are threefold.
