Understanding Anaphylaxis and Emergency Response
Anaphylaxis FAQ
Is anaphylaxis a disease?
The condition is immune-mediated and rapidly induces symptoms. For those who have not encountered anaphylaxis, the diagnosis can be difficult. In the United States, the rates of anaphylaxis have doubled over the past 20 years, and at least 1500 people die from the disorder each year.
How does anaphylaxis affect the body?
Anaphylaxis causes the immune system to release a flood of chemicals that can cause you to go into shock — blood pressure drops suddenly and the airways narrow, blocking breathing. Signs and symptoms include a rapid, weak pulse; a skin rash; and nausea and vomiting. Common triggers include certain foods, some medications, insect venom and latex.
What are the symptoms of anaphylaxis?
Anaphylaxis is the most severe type of allergic reaction. It can happen after exposure to certain triggers including foods, bites and stings or medicines. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat and collapse.
What information do you need to know about anaphylaxis?
Action Plans, Forms, Checklists | Adrenaline injector information | Anaphylaxis Guidelines | ASCIA anaphylaxis e-training courses | Translations of anaphylaxis information | Information for patients and carers Anaphylaxis is the most severe type of allergic reaction and should always be treated as a medical emergency.
How does anaphylaxis occur?
They occur via direct stimulation of mast cells or via immune complexes that activate complement. Symptoms of anaphylaxis typically begin within 15 minutes of exposure and involve the skin, upper or lower airways, cardiovascular system, and/or gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
