Ear Inflammation FAQ
What is an ear infection?
An ear infection (sometimes called acute otitis media) is an infection of the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. Children are more likely than adults to get ear infections.
What causes ear infections?
Ear infections can affect different parts of the ear and may be caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. The recommended treatment can vary based on the type of ear infection and the specific cause. Ear infections may be more common in children than in adults, but adults are still susceptible to these infections.
What is otitis media ear infection?
This type of infection is also known as swimmer’s ear. Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear. The infection is usually caused by a virus. Antibiotics are not required. Less commonly it is caused by bacteria and may require antibiotics. Sometimes the eardrum will burst, leading to a discharge of fluid. This will usually heal by itself.
What causes middle ear inflammation?
They often stem from a prior infection of the respiratory tract that spreads to the ears. When the tube that connects the middle ear to the pharynx (eustachian tube) is blocked, fluid will collect behind the eardrum. Bacteria will often grow in the fluid, causing pain and inflammation. What are the symptoms of a middle ear inflammation?
