Genetic Profiling FAQ
What is DNA profiling?
DNA profiling is the process where a specific DNA pattern, called a profile, is obtained from a person or sample of bodily tissue Even though we are all unique, most of our DNA is actually identical to other people’s DNA. However, specific regions vary highly between people. These regions are called polymorphic.
What is DNA fingerprinting & profiling?
DNA fingerprinting or profiling comprises any DNA-based techniques that identifies the DNA from a certain individual or group of individuals within a community of organisms. The DNA fingerprints may be used as a tool for determining the identity of a specific DNA sample, or to assess the relatedness between samples.
Why is DNA profiling important in genealogy?
Aside from criminal trials and appeals, DNA profiling has become an important tool in genealogy. Many companies provide DNA profiling for this purpose. One of the largest ones, Family Tree DNA, uses Y-SRT testing to determine paternal lineage and mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA testing) to determine maternal lineage.
Who invented DNA profiling?
British geneticist Sir Alec Jeffreys independently developed a process for DNA profiling in 1985 while working in the Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester. Jefferys discovered that a DNA examiner could establish patterns in unknown DNA.
What is a DNA profile?
The autoradiograph, with its distinctive dark-colored parallel bands, is the DNA profile. PCR analysis is usually the first step in the creation of a DNA profile today. PCR enables DNA amplification, meaning it can replicate a small amount of DNA to create a larger sample for analysis.
