Multiplex Pathogen Detection Technology Explained
Multiplex Pathogen Detection FAQ
What syndromic multiplex tests can detect multiple enteric pathogens?
We will focus on two FDA cleared commercial syndromic multiplex tests: Luminex xTAG GPP and Biofire FimArray GI test. These multiplex tests can detect and identify multiple enteric pathogens in one test and provide results within hours. Multiplex PCR tests have shown superior sensitivity to conventional methods for detection of most pathogens.
Can multiplex PCR test detect microbial pathogens in stool?
Numerous laboratory-developed multiplex PCR tests have been reported for detection and identification of microbial pathogens in stool and, recently, two FDA cleared multiplex tests, the Luminex xTAG GPP and Biofire FimArray GI test, have been quickly applied in clinical practice.
Can a multiplex PCR system detect bacterial pneumonia?
A multiplex PCR system has been developed and optimized for rapid detection of the five main pathogens of bacterial pneumonia. The system can be expanded to analyze viral pathogens of pneumonia (DNA- and RNA-containing viruses), as well as those of a fungal nature.
How is multiplex PCR used?
All cultures were cultured and separated by traditional methods. The multiplex PCR method offers a rapid, simple, and accurate identification of pathogens and could be used in food safety investigations, clinical diagnosis as well as for the surveillance of the spreading determinants of pathogens in epidemiological studies.
Can multiplex molecular POC be detected based on clinical syndromes?
From a total of 633 specimens, the direct PCR-analysis results were 98.4% and 99.9% for sensitivity and specificity, respectively. Numerous studies involving multiplex molecular POC are now moving toward extensive diagnosis capability, but few kits have been approved for the detection of multiple pathogens based on clinical syndromes (Table 1 ).
Are multiplex panels useful in Clinical Infectious Disease?
Further clinical utility studies will highlight the importance of the different pathogens detected by the multiplex panels. However, independent of this work, continuing improvements to these IVD systems are likely to increase their value in the clinical infectious disease setting.
Can multiplex real-time PCR detect bacterial pathogens causing lower respiratory tract infections?
Dung, T.T.N., Phat, V.V., Vinh, C. et al. Development and validation of multiplex real-time PCR for simultaneous detection of six bacterial pathogens causing lower respiratory tract infections and antimicrobial resistance genes.
