Research Applications in Scientific Studies
Research Applications FAQ
What is applied research?
Applied research is original investigation undertaken to acquire new knowledge but directed towards a specific, practical aim or objective (including a client-driven purpose). Activities that support the conduct of research and therefore meet the definition of research include:
What is a research purpose?
A research purpose is met through forming hypotheses, collecting data, analysing results, forming conclusions, implementing findings into real-life applications and forming new research questions. Simply put, research is the process of discovering new knowledge.
Why is applied research important?
Applied research investigates well-known theories and principles in order to enhance knowledge around a practical aim. Because of this, applied research focuses on solving real-life problems by deriving knowledge which has an immediate application.
What is the difference between basic research and applied research?
This definition of research encompasses pure and strategic basic research, applied research and experimental development. Applied research is original investigation undertaken to acquire new knowledge but directed towards a specific, practical aim or objective (including a client-driven purpose).
When will external research applications be accepted in Queensland?
From 1 January 2022, the Queensland Department of Education (DoE) introduced new criteria for accepting external research applications. The following types of research applications will be accepted for departmental review via Queensland Education Research Inventory (QERI) :
How do I apply for research assistance from a school?
If you want further assistance from a school, such as help in recruiting participants, sending out information sheets to parents and/or students or collecting consent forms, you will need to submit a full research application via the Queensland Education Research Inventory (QERI) .
How do I apply for research in Queensland?
Application approval is conditional on researchers abiding by the department's terms and conditions (PDF, 148 KB). Contact research services or your local regional office for more information. Find out how to apply to conduct research or advertise your study in schools and other government educational facilities in Queensland.
How do I submit a research application?
If you're a first-time user of QERI, you'll need to start by creating an account. When you log in, you'll be asked some questions about your proposed research, to assess whether you need to submit a research application. To submit an application please visit the QERI website and follow the instructions.
