How much doxycycline hyclate is in Periostat®?

Each tablet contains 23 mg of doxycycline hyclate equivalent to 20 mg of doxycycline. Periostat® (doxycycline hyclate) is indicated for use as an adjunct to scaling and root planing to promote attachment level gain and to reduce pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis.

What are Periostat tablets used for?

Periostat tablets are used to treat advanced gum disease (periodontitis). This is a condition caused by the build-up of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gums, which causes the gums to become inflamed and infected and the teeth to get loose and fall out.

What happens if you overdose on Periostat?

Periostat dosage differs from that of doxycycline used to treat infections. Exceeding the recommended dosage may result in an increased incidence of side effects including the development of resistant microorganisms. Periostat is taken orally in capsule form. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Periostat.
