What is telavancin used for?
Telavancin is an antibiotic that is used to treat severe skin infections caused by bacteria. Telavancin is also used to treat pneumonia in a hospital setting, or pneumonia that can develop while using a ventilator (artificial breathing machine). Telavancin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What is telavancin HCl?
As more data become available, it is likely that telavancin will be found to have additional uses in the management of various infections. Figure 1A illustrates the chemical structure of telavancin HCl, which is synthetically derived from vancomycin.
Is telavancin bactericidal?
Telavancin is a semi-synthetic derivative of vancomycin, therefore the mode of bactericidal action is similar to vancomycin in which both antibiotics inhibit cell wall synthesis. Not only that, it displays concentration-dependent bactericidal action.
Is telavancin a lipoglycopeptide?
A novel entity lipoglycopeptide, telavancin (Vibativ, Theravance/Astellas), was granted FDA approval in September 2009 for the treatment of adults with complicated skin and skin structure infections (cSSSIs). Telavancin is currently recommended for patients with susceptible or highly suspected gram-positive bacterial infections.
Is telavancin a bactericidal lipoglycopeptide?
Telavancin (trade name Vibativ) is a bactericidal lipoglycopeptide for use in MRSA or other Gram-positive infections. Telavancin is a semi-synthetic derivative of vancomycin.
Does telavancin treat Gram-positive infections?
Telavancin has several attractive qualities as a treatment option for serious gram-positive infections, particularly for MRSA.
