What is nasal congestion & why is it a problem?

Nasal congestion happens when something irritates tissues lining the inside of your nose. The irritation sets off a chain reaction of inflammation, swelling and mucus production, making it hard to take in air through your nose. Left untreated, nasal congestion may cause sinusitis, nasal polyps or middle ear infections.

What is the difference between nasal congestion and sinus congestion?

Nasal congestion is related to increased blood volume to the vessels that line the nasal passages. Sinus congestion refers to a feeling of fullness in the sinuses. Both nasal and sinus congestion are most often caused by viral infections, however, there are other causes that may need to be evaluated.

What are the different types of head congestion?

There are generally two types of head congestion. Nasal congestion is related to increased blood volume to the vessels that line the nasal passages. Sinus congestion refers to a feeling of fullness in the sinuses.

What causes nasal congestion?

Causes of nasal congestion include infections usually caused by viruses and allergies to grass, pet dander, foods or other substances. It can be treated with medications called decongestants such as pseudoephedrine or antihistamines like diphenhydramine (depending on the cause).

How long does nasal congestion last?

Nasal congestion symptoms usually clear up after a few days. It may be helpful to take some medication to reduce some of the symptoms whilst waiting for the immune system to fight off the germs. Over-the-counter medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be helpful for headaches or fever. A decongestant medicine may help the blocked nose.
