What is oral thrush?

Oral thrush — also called oral candidiasis (kan-dih-DIE-uh-sis) — is a condition in which the fungus Candida albicans accumulates on the lining of your mouth. Candida is a normal organism in your mouth, but sometimes it can overgrow and cause symptoms. Oral thrush causes creamy white lesions, usually on your tongue or inner cheeks.

What Is Thrush? Thrush is an infection caused by the candida fungus, which is a type of yeast. You can get it in your mouth and sometimes other parts of the body. If you notice strange white bumps inside your mouth, it might be oral thrush. It’s also called oral candidiasis.

What causes thrush?

Most thrush is caused by the fungus candida albicans. This fungus exists naturally in the vagina, mouth, bowel and elsewhere. Normally, it causes no problems. But in some circumstances, the balance of normal bacteria and fungi in the body changes and the fungus starts to multiply and cause symptoms.
