What is tissue repair?

Tissue repair (TR) refers to compensatory regeneration of a tissue followed by surgical, mechanical, or chemical-induced injury resulting in restoration of structure and function of the tissue. From: Encyclopedia of Toxicology (Second Edition), 2005 K. Krafts, inEncyclopedia of Toxicology (Third Edition), 2014

What is tissue repair & wound healing?

Tissue repair and wound healing is a highly orchestrated sequence of complex overlapping events that are precisely timed to repair damage, prevent infection, and restore function of tissue after injury or insult.

Can a tissue injury be repaired?

While a few types of tissue injury (such as minor paper cuts) can sometimes be healed in such a way that no permanent damage remains, most of our tissue repair consists of both regeneration and replacement.

What is repair after injury?

Repair after injury can occur by regeneration of cells or tissues that restores normal tissue structure, or by healing, which leads to the formation of a scar. In case of regeneration, the damaged or lost tissue is replaced by the proliferation of surrounding undamaged cells and tissue.

What is the immediate goal of tissue repair?

The immediate goal in repair is to achieve tissue integrity and homeostasis. To achieve this goal, in most tissues the healing process follows in different organs the principle of sequential phases that overlap in time and space: hemostasis, inflammation, tissue formation, and tissue remodeling.
