Immune Function - Defending Body Against Pathogens
Immune Function FAQ
Why is inflammatory response important?
Inflammation is part of the body’s natural defense process designed to protect against things such as infections, toxins and trauma — and to repair any damage that might occur. The inflammatory response activates a cascade of immune reactions that eliminates germs and repairs injured cells.
What is immunological memory?
A person’s protection from pathogens develops as they go through life. Thanks to vaccinations and exposure to various diseases, the body develops a range of antibodies to different pathogens. Doctors sometimes refer to this as immunological memory because the immune system remembers previous enemies.
How do lymphocytes help the body remember previous invaders?
Lymphocytes help the body remember previous invaders and recognize them if they return to attack again. Lymphocytes begin their life in bone marrow. Some stay in the marrow and develop into B lymphocytes (B cells); others travel to the thymus and become T lymphocytes (T cells). These two cell types have different roles.
